Electric Fence Tips Prior to Setup

After you’ve purchased your wireless fence, you must decide where to position your perimeter. Most electric fences have flags to designate the boundary location in your yard. Once the flags are in place, you can begin electric dog fence training.

Training Is Crucial To The Effectiveness Of Your Fence

Set aside time specifically for electric dog fence training. A calendar is helpful to chart your progress and monitor when your dog is ready for the next phase. It also keeps you from turning your dog loose before he’s properly trained. Keep in mind that dogs are more receptive when you’re in a happy mood, and a frazzled pet owner makes for an unresponsive pet.

If you have two dogs, it is important that you train each separately. When you start training, minimize distractions by keeping your other dog out of sight.

How Long Will Electric Dog Fence Training Take?

Electric dog fence training usually takes about two weeks. The actual time will depend on your commitment to training and your dog’s age, size, temperament, and breed. You should plan on two-three sessions per day with your dog. Keep each session around 15 minutes long.

Electric Dog Fence Training Tips

Before every training session, play with your dog for a little while within the roaming area.
Remember to attach the leash to your dog’s training collar, and not the electronic collar, in order to prevent the static correction probes from hurting your dog when you pull on the leash.
Begin each training session with a review of the past day’s training and end each session with playtime.
Keep sessions fun.
After every session, remember to remove the electronic collar and reward your dog with plenty of praise and playtime: Throw a ball, give him food, or play a fun game, such as fetch.

What You Will Need For Electric Dog Fence Training

You will need a non-metallic training collar, 6′ leash, electronic wireless collar, and a positive attitude. Use the same collar you normally use for training, such as a Halti or no-slip collar.

Preliminary Phase Of Electric Dog Fence Training – Introduce the Flag Line

Place the training collar and electronic collar on your dog and attach the leash to the training collar. The fence should not be active during this phase of electric dog fence training. Walk your dog within the roaming area for a while. Approach the boundary flag line with your dog on the leash. When he reaches the flag line, gently shake a flag while saying “Bad Flags”. Do not yell or frighten your dog. Lead your dog back into the roaming area and immediately praise him. Repeat this procedure at several points around the perimeter. Conclude this session of electric dog fence training with praise. Move on to the next phase once your dog gets used to returning to the roaming area when you approach the flags.  This phase of electric dog fence training can take one to three days or longer depending on the frequency of training and your dog’s temperament.

Phase One Of Electric Dog Fence Training – Tone Correction

This phase trains your dog to move away from the flags when he hears the tone from the electronic collar. Start by setting the electronic collar to the tone-only correction level, placing the electronic collar and the training collar on your dog, and then attaching a leash to the training collar.

Walk your leashed dog around the roaming area for 5 minutes, then approach the boundary. When the tone sounds, gently shake the flag and say “Bad Flags” so your dog will associate the tone with the flags. Lead your dog back into the roaming area. When the beeping stops and your dog is safely back in the roaming area, praise him. Repeat this process a few more times around the perimeter of your yard. Finish the session of electric dog fence training with playtime in the roaming area. When your dog automatically turns away from the flags when you approach, you’re ready to move to the next phase of training.  This phase of electric dog fence training can take one to three days or longer depending on the frequency of training and your dog’s temperament.

Phase Two Of Electric Dog Fence Training – Static Correction

Set the electronic collar to the lowest static correction level and fit it around your dog’s neck. For 5 minutes, walk your dog around the yard on a leash within the roaming area only. Next, approach the boundary to allow your dog to receive the correction. Gently shake a flag and say “Bad Flags” so your dog will associate the short tone and static correction with the flags. Lead your dog back into the roaming area and praise him immediately.

Keep these sessions short so your dog doesn’t receive too many static corrections, as he may become stressed. Remember to praise your dog every time he returns to the roaming area. End each session of electric dog fence training with lots of praise and playtime within the roaming area. When your dog avoids going near any of the training flags, move to phase three. This phase of electric dog fence training can take one to three days or longer depending on the frequency of training and your dog’s temperament.

Phase Three Of Electric Dog Fence Training – Distractions

It is important to train your dog not to go outside of the roaming area when distractions occur. With your dog on a leash and the electronic collar on, position your dog near the flags. Toss a ball outside the trigger zone. If your dog stays still, praise him. If he goes for the toy, allow the correction. Gently shake a flag and say “Bad Flags” so that your dog will associate the short tone and static correction with the flags. Then lead your dog back into the roaming area and praise him immediately. Repeat a few times each session, so your dog will begin to understand when he or she crosses the flag line, there will be a short tone and static correction.

Train your dog with many different distractions. Have a child cross the perimeter, have someone walk by with a dog, or toss food outside the perimeter. Get creative and pay attention to your surroundings. If the trash men come by every Tuesday morning, plan to have your practice session then. Remember to finish every session of electric dog fence training with praise and playtime. Proceed to phase four when your dog no longer needs the correction to avoid temptations.  This phase of electric dog fence training can take one to three days or longer depending on the frequency of training and your dog’s temperament.

Phase Four Of Electric Dog Fence Training – Off Leash Supervision

Your dog is ready to be off the leash. Make sure the electronic collar is activated and keep the training collar on in case you need to attach the leash and repeat part of phase three. Monitor your dog from a distance as he walks around the inside the roaming area. If your dog crosses the trigger zone, promptly lead him back to the roaming area. Be sure to repeat all the distractions you trained for in phase three, to make sure your dog is truly trained. Move to the final phase when your dog doesn’t breach the fence boundary in your presence while off leash, even with distractions.  This phase of electric dog fence training can take one to three days or longer depending on the frequency of training and your dog’s temperament.

Phase Five Of Electric Dog Fence Training – Dog Monitoring

You should now be able to let your dog go outside alone with his electronic collar on and activated. Also continue to keep the training collar on your dog.  It’s recommended that you monitor your dog from inside your home. Only allow him outside for a short amount of time at first, and then gradually increase the intervals as long as he behaves. Remember to praise your dog when he comes back inside.

Well done! Your dog has successfully completed all the phases of electric dog fence training; so let him enjoy his newfound freedom!

You can remove the training flags after 3 weeks of successful Dog Monitoring.  Remove every other flag once a week until all the flags have been removed.

Things to Remember

After your dog has completed electric dog fence training, he may be uncomfortable leaving the roaming area. So it’s a good idea to establish one of the following systems:

1. Carry your dog out.

2. Take your dog out in a car.

3. Walk your dog out of the yard in only one spot. Only leave the yard with your dog on a leash and remember to remove the electronic collar before crossing. Adding a command, such as “Cross”, to the action also helps.

Pets can be very rambunctious when playing in the yard, and may often be unaware of boundaries between safety and risk of danger from passing vehicles. If your pet’s safety is a constant concern, it may be time for you to get an electric pet fence installed.

Diet Tips For A Healthy Cat

]]>

Most of us know that feeding our cat is not really a chore at all. Dump the food in a big bowl or dish, and the cat will eat when it’s ready. Unlike a dog, cats tend to not overeat and therefore are more easily manageable than most other house pets. However, we need to be careful when assuming that the food that we are feeding our cat, and the manner by which we feed our cat, are the best choices for our cat. Here are some tips on how to maintain a healthy diet for your kitty.

Feed your cat based on their activity.

Is your cat an active cat or does it to lay around the house all day waiting for its next meal? If your cat is overweight and not very active at all, leaving a bowl full of food is probably not the best idea. It is at this point that you should begin to manage how much you feed your cat, what you feed your cat, and how often. By taking charge of your cat’s feeding habits, you will be able to increase the life and longevity of your cat by making this simple and easy choice. A simple “Here kitty kitty kitty” will make your overweight and hungry feline run for the bowl to eat your rationed healthy amount of cat food.

Watch the weather!

Simply put, the environment in which your animal lives directly affects and influences their energy needs. Extreme hot or cold weather can increases a pet’s energy needs and drinking habits. Make sure that on hot days water is readily available and that you feed your cat more canned food then dry. The water content within the canned food will help the cat retain water if it is not able to get to the water dish on a regular basis. If the weather is cold, make sure that you are feeding your cat very nutritional cat food that is not full of filler so that your cat will have more of the necessary nutrients to digest to ensure that it stays healthy.

Cat feeding times

Although discussed previously, there is much more to say about having a specific feeding time for your cat. Not only does this allow you to feed your cat nutritional canned food, you will also know that it will not be left in the open. Preservatives are nice, but let’s not take any chances with the food left out.

Also, by having specific feeding times, this allows you to monitor your cat’s diet by providing the food at regular times. It is a kind of portion-control feeding, however, most cats will simply eat until they have what they need.

Bottom line: keep a bowl full of a regular dry cat food and monitor the intake of canned food to ensure that your cat does not get overweight and is as healthy as it can be.

Buy the best

Though this sounds economically wrong, the truth of the matter is this: cheap cat food usually is cheap because of the added fillers that are put into the food.

As a general rule, cats need a daily regimen of protein found in meat, fish, or poultry. They also need an essential amino acid called Taurine and various other vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids.

If you have looked at a label for cat food, you will notice that wheat, rice, and even corn is used as filler for both canned and dry cat foods. Make sure that the cat food that you choose has the proper amounts of protein, vitamins, and minerals and not as much filler. The price of the cat food usually justifies its quality. And, as an added benefit, cats usually only eat as much as their bodies need. Therefore, your cat will probably eat less of the expensive of cat food because it contains more of the nutrients that it needs and not as much filler.

Avoid food addictions

Cats are said to be finicky animals. Whether this is true or not, cats have been known to develop a certain affinity toward particular brands and types of food. This could become a problem, especially if your cat develops a food allergy to certain ingredients and preservatives that may be contained within that cat food.

In order to avoid this, it is recommended that early in a cat’s life that it gets used to having different varieties of cat food and different flavors. This way, the cat is less likely to develop an affinity for a particular brand which may inevitably lead to the cat developing a food allergy because of the lack of variety in its daily diet.

Overall, by avoiding cat food products that have chemical preservatives like BHA, cornmeal, and other carbohydrate fillers, you should be able to maintain your cat’s health at an optimal level.

Small Tips on Training your Cat

Edit Article |

Posted: Jan 05, 2011 |

]]>

This article is for the small behaviors that could be medical and with tips to help in the right direction for training.

Teeth grinding could be a sign of improper bit of a kitten. A mature cat that has just started this would be a time to visit the vet to find out if there is some medical problem with the cat’s mouth, teeth, or gums. Changing the cat’s diet also can help. Usually in older cats, the dry food becomes hard to chew and you will need to change to soft food or a wet cat food. When doing this you will want to be careful with changing the diet. Take small steps; start with mixing small amounts with some dry food. In addition, of course leave the dry food for the rest of the meal. Allow the cat to eat the mix food you gave first then the rest of the dry food. You can do this until you have completely changed over to the other food. Important to remember to get the cat to the vet to make sure there is no under lying medical problem with your cat. .

Is your cat rubbing it bottom all over the floor? This may not really be a sign of worms. Look at your cat’s diet and physiology. If a cat is eating their own hair this will pass though the cat but will become uncomfortable for them to pass. If the long hair is hanging out the bottom this is a way that your cat is using to remove the rest of the hair. Taking the cat to the vet is the best thing for de worming and examination. Keeping your cat groomed is very important especially in long hair cats daily grooming is required. This will help with the cat chewing the hair.

Clingy and follower cats can become annoying. Afflicted cat will cling and exhibits advance lap fungus symptoms. When you leave your cat in an enclosed room, the cat will cry as if you have left it alone for every. This is a good time to stop and have some one on one activity with the cat just for a short time. This would be a good start to training for the cat. As they will learn that, you have activity time. Use good food reward for this, when the cat is not screaming and in another room, this is a time to reward with a small treat not all the time but to let your cat know that you approve of this.

Did you get a new kitten and have to give it a name. Toby, Molly or what every perfect name you pick for the cat will become very important. You will wan to train your cat to come to you and have your attention when you call him. With most cats and animals, have simple small names. This is something you will want to do. Start with learning about clickers this is a great tool in training a cat. You can push, and it makes a clicking sound that cats can hear. You can find these in pet stores and on the internet.

For training the kitten to respond to the name , sit with the cat in your lap with cuddling, say the cats name, click, the cat responds to the click say the name, give a small treat. Use bite size liver treats for this. Small liver treats works great. Continue with the training with the name. Once the cat learns that you say the name, a click, a treat, the next step will be to say the name, no click, cat responds, and then the treat. Soon your cat will come to you when you say his name. At this time, reduce the treats until you are not giving a treat for the name training.

No matter what the problem is there are basic training tips.
Patience, time, and caring will be the most important of all.
Give your cat a hug today; this starts a great relationship with your and your cat.

Cat breeding is not as easy as just letting cats mate. Breeding is not just about choosing cats to produce adorable kittens to earn money. To breed cats is not the same as to produce them. Breeding encompasses that stage.

Breeding cats involves scientific and systematic concepts. Producing cats involves only common sense. Breeding cats has an emotional aspect to it. Fulfillment does not come from mere moneymaking. Sacrifices have to be made to achieve the breeder’s
goal: to safeguard the welfare of the cats.

A lot of things must be taken into consideration before breeding cats. Here is a guide to help us better understand the dynamic process of cat breeding.

- A cat breeder’s concern is the preservation or improvement of cat pedigree.

This is a serious matter. Selection of the parent cats is done on the basis of health, quality traits and reproducing capability. A breeder will never pair cats carelessly.

- A cat breeder is dedicated to learn more about cats.

A lot of things must be learned regarding cat breeding. Latest researches must be employed to properly select the cats to be bred. The welfare of the cats depends on how much the breeder knows.

- A cat breeder makes plans.

Breeding does not involve hasty actions.

- A cat breeder has to follow rules set by the government.

Breeders are obliged to register their cats to their respective breeds. Certain taxes are imposed to hobbyists and to businessmen alike.

- A cat breeder’s primary motive is to take care of cats. Monetary motives come after this.

A cat’s life is more important than money. And it is more rewarding to see the kittens grow. The money earned is just an additional reward.

- A cat breeder’s responsibility to the cats does not end.

His care for his cats does not end when the kittens were sold.

- A cat breeder holds the future of the cat’s offspring.

Whatever a cat breeder does affects the life of the kittens, thus extra care must be given by cat breeders when making decisions.

- A cat breeder knows when to stop breeding.

Breeding is not just about having many cats. It is about taking care of all of them.

After learning about these things, it can be concluded that breeding is an arduous task indeed. However, for those who are cat breeders at heart, all these hardships are worth the kittens they bred (not produced)!

Cats are best bought from responsible cat breeders. Hobbyists choose to own purebred cats because their temperaments are more predictable than cats with unknown pedigrees.

If you are getting a cat from a cat breeder, ask him about the number of cat breeds that he has so you can choose from them. Also, ask him how many years he has been breeding cats and whether he can give you a health guarantee and complete papers for the cat.

Top cat breeds:

If you want to show off your cat then it is best to choose from among the top five cat breeds throughout the world.

1. Persian-Persian cats are called Persian for their country of origin. Persians have a long coat, sweet personality and have the ability to blend into the household. These are the qualities that made Persians one of the top choices of cat lovers. However, its long coat requires daily combing to avoid tangles.

2. Maine Coon-These are long-haired cats with good mouse hunting skills. These cats are good companions for children.

3. Exotic-This breed can offer you the better of two worlds. The Exotic cat has the look of a Persian cat, but it has short hair, making it easy to groom. They look like teddy bears with their thick and short coats. These cats are sweet and good companions like the Persians.

4. Siamese-Siamese cats originally came from Siam or Thailand. This cat possesses an aristocratic head, looks almost like a deer because of it’s stiff ears, and has a short coat. Siamese cats have long bodies, long legs and long necks.

5. Abyssinian-These cats are very elegant-looking, much like the cats portrayed in Egyptian sculptures. Abyssinia is the former name of Ethiopia. However, Abyssinian cats did not originate in Ethiopia. They got the name because the first cats of Abyssinian breed, which were exhibited in England, were from Abyssinia.

No matter what your choice of a cat breed is, make sure that your cat is healthy and that it has already been weaned. The ideal age to get a kitten is about 14 weeks, when their immune systems are already developed.

Cat Pet Training

Your first cat pet training tip should be to understand why they do some of the things that they do. Some cat behavior is out of boredom, some out of transitional changes as they grow out of kitten stages into adulthood, and some can be a symptom of impending or ongoing illnesses. Giving your Goldendoodle a bath

Many Goldendoodle owners allow their Goldendoodle to become a matted, dirty mess because the act of bathing is simply too much of a hassle. I have to partly agree. Sometimes it really can be. Especially if you own more than one and if your Goldendoodle has a shaggy or curly coat. The smooth coat Goldendoodle is the easiest doodle to bathe and maintain, of all three coat types.

If creating family pets or even dog or cat paintings you can find a quantity of essential details to help make a person’s end product turn out the best way you meant.

1:The majority of People browse by way of left to right which also will apply to how we go through a painting. So create ones source of light forty five degrees to the left as well as fortyfive degrees up from your content.

2: Use only one size and type of brush as opposed to a selection of brushes. That way you’re able to know precisely exactly what this will do and the way to find the exact same results or outcomes regularly. It gets to be instinctive, in-born, as opposed to one thing you need to think of while using it.

3: Pick-up fresh paint with all the tip of the particular brush mainly, never dip the whole brush in the fresh paint so you colour nearly the ferrule (metallic area of the brush). For those who overload any brush with color, absorb the excess water by wrap a material or perhaps towel round the bristles near the ferrule, definitely not by cleaning the tip using a towel.

4: You’ll be able to erase graphite (pencil) by using red-colored and also blue watercolours, although not thru yellow-colored.

5: Allow papers to dry in between glazes. Should you not, you will find muddy effects because damp colors will certainly blend over the document.

6: Continually shade in the direction of growth, whether it’s fur on an creature or maybe a stalk on a shrub.

7: When you need to be able to properly shade a bird flying, one of the keys is exactly how right your wing is actually plus the direction on the wing’s sides.

8: Knowing the bones there are in the bird’s feet, and how many toes travel forwards or back, enables you to put its feet correctly in a position while painting the application.

9: When viewing an animal’s thighs and leg, remember to take into account exactly what you are looking at. Would it be an ankle, leg, or even hip? Thighs possess about three important joints: hip, knee, and also ankle. The actual knee a lot higher when compared with what you consider — at belly level — and also the ankle joint wherever you would expect a knee.

10: Get acquainted with the number of colours it is possible to make using 3 primaries simply by glazing. The fewer prime colours you utilize inside a piece of art, the better ‘harmonious’ the result.

Pet Bureau’s Top Tips To Help Prevent Your Cat Getting Lost

Edit Article |

]]>

I think it’s safe to say that most humans have a bit of a soft spot when it comes animals, especially cats and dogs and we at Pets Bureau are no different.  We dedicate ourselves to protecting your pets and also you, the owners should something ever happen to your beloved cat or dog.  We spend hours upon hours dedicating ourselves to our pets, ensuring they are living happy lives which of course involves letting them outside.

The difference though, when we let our dogs out, quite often we are with them.  We have leads to keep them on and we generally keep an eye on them.  Unlike cats which we just tend to open up the door and let them go off and do their own thing.  We have many cats and dogs on our Lost Pets Register but it stands to reason given the freedom we allow our cats that they outnumber the dogs.

So, how can you the owner help to minimize the chances of your cat not returning when you let them out?

Its best to start from the very beginning when it comes to cats, get them used to a routine that you set rather than their own.  Here are a few tips to help:

-          If your cat is male and around six months of age then getting him neutered would definitely be worth considering, it will help to curb his need to roam and stray too far from home.  Consult your vet for further information on neutering.

-          Keeping your cat in for at least two weeks to a month minimum before letting them out, this gives them time to familiarize themselves with their new home, the scent of the place and to relate home with things such as food as we all know cats love their food.

-          Get your cat used to two meals a day, morning and during the evening.  Once you have been doing that for about a week let them out an hour or so before their evening meal as he will be less inclined to wander far.

-          Taking your cat around your garden in a harness to help it familiarize itself with the outside without the danger of them getting carried away with its new surroundings and ending up lost and unsure how to get back.

-          The last tip may seem odd, and some people label it as nothing more than an old wives tale but my family have had numerous cats over the years and we have done this to all of them and none of them have ever gone missing.  Butter, yes butter.  When you put your cat outside for the first time, coat its paws in butter (I did tell you it was odd.)  The reasoning behind this is, when you put your cat outside he/she will sit there and lick their paws clean and in doing so, they are taking in the scent and its surroundings gradually without being overwhelmed.  Also when the cat does begin to wander it will have the scent of the butter to follow back.

Those are my  top pick of tips to help preventing your cat from getting lost, of course none of these offer 100% certainty that your cat will return as they do have a mind of their own and are very intelligent creatures but these tips should help to prevent such a scenario from occurring.

At this juncture I feel as though I should mention chipping.  If your cat has not been micro chipped, I highly recommend doing so.  Many owners do not put collars on their cat’s never mind getting them chipped.  Spare yourself the agony of knowing that your cat is out there lost, without any identification as to who the owners are.

Simple Ways on How to Train your Dogs

Training a dog can bring fun and excitement both to the owner and their pet dog. Many people adopt one because of their own personal reasons, but the most obvious reason why people buy one is because they would like to have a pet, a companion, a friend or a toy dog. In some rare cases, dogs are also used for sports; some are used as a watch dog or some as a working dog.

Sue Hipperson has taken her love of pets to the next level by setting up a specialist, nationwide pet protection service which has already reunited many lost and stolen cats and dogs with their owners. Pets Bureau was founded in January 2009 and – through a clever marrying of social networking sites, an extensive database of pets and a network of like-minded members; including dog wardens and police – has achieved an 80 per cent success rate. To find out more about our services please go to Sue, a life-long animal lover, adores dogs but is owned by six cats! Namely Chippey, Philly, Blackie, Robbie, Blue and Sceley, has been overwhelmed with the response she has received from members and the pet-loving public.
